Land Resource Mapping

Since 2002, I have seen a need for someone to be able to build maps for landowners and managers. Through the technology that we have with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), it only makes sense to use these as another tool to manage the land, map exactly where everything is, and have something to hang on the wall that gives you a sense of pride every day you see it.

There are only two types of institutions that provide this same type of service: private sector and the government. I cannot speak for those in the private sector, but for those of you that have had to deal with the government you may have found they are sometimes slow, they are filing more and more paper work than necessary and, worst of all, they are not getting out in the field like they should to do the ground work.

When I incorporated this mapping business into Running Enterprise, I made it a personal goal to not become what I just described. I want to provide a more powerful tool for you managers so that making day to day management decisions becomes easier.

Procedure

When a landowner/manager comes to me and asks me to map their land, we first sit down and outline their goals in which they are trying to accomplish. After that, we start the GPS process. This involves going out onto the land and taking waypoints, creating routes, and finding those special things that need to appear on the map. This takes some time simply because I need to get it right before I go to the computer.

Next it is on to the computer. I download anything and everything that we found out in the field. This is where things come serious. Creating maps is not a simple chore. It is very time consuming and everything must be done exactly right, otherwise I would be doing your business a disservice. I don't just build one map either. I build several maps, depending on what the goals were. The end product may have only one or two maps to as many as twenty or more, it just depends on the situation. The more maps, the more opportunities there are for my clients to see things a little different on every map, therefore assisting in making better management decisions.

All maps are printed out on 8.5"x11" paper. I then present them to the landowner/manager. The maps that they feel that they will use the most, we then have those maps printed out on larger paper for a better view. After that you are off and running and you will wonder how you did things before!

Types of Maps That Are Important to Landowners/Managers

Aerial photo maps
Topography maps
Soil survey maps

Important features to map

Fence lines
Pipelines
Utility lines
Trails
Water sources
Water rights
Hunting areas
Access points (gates, auto gates, bridges, creek crossings)
Potential fence lines
Potential pipelines
See how to change things on the ground before you actually do it
Buying/Selling real estate
Spraying weeds / rodent issues
Forestry management
Total acres—to the tenth of an acre
Elevation differences
Many, many more things

I do all of the mapping on my own; however, in certain situations I will go into any government office and work with those people if I need too to make sure the proper things are getting done to accomplish the goals of the landowner/manager. The options that I can do with this are almost endless; it just depends on how you want to use this service.
