The following is a Flash movie depicting the building of a creek crossing using concrete railroad ties:
Below is the creek crossing that is shown being installed above one year later. When I installed it, I left a gap between the creek bed and the creek crossing itself. Through the course of the year it started catching more and more trash. Now it is backing up a little water. This creek crossing was installed with the goal of providing vehicle, ATV, livestock, and horse access from one part of a pasture to another that was not otherwise easily accessible. What I have found is that this application could be used for both livestock and wildlife. This is a cheap and affordable way to address accessibility issues while backing up some water for livestock and wildlife and, most importantly, improving the quality of the land and improving habitat.
Gravel was hauled in to the rubber tire tanks, then concrete ties were placed around the gravel. The gravel is used to prevent a mud bog from forming around the tank and the concrete ties are used to keep the livestock from dragging the gravel around the tank.
